Causes of Pigmentation

The skin is made up of two layers, viz. the epidermis (the upper layer) and dermis (the lower one). These two layers are further divided into sub layers. Basal, the lowest layer of the epidermis contain a special type of organelles, known as melanosomes. The melanosomes contained within certain type of cells called melanocytes, which are mainly responsible for the product of the melanin component. The skin color of a person depends on his/her melanin count.

Factors such as prolonged exposure to sun, stress, skin injury along with other hormonal changes may increase or decrease the normal count of melanin in your body, thereby resulting into pigmentation. Again pigmentation can be classified into two broad categories, viz. hyper-pigmentation and hypo-pigmentation.

Hypo pigmentation is a skin condition, where the person develops white patches on the skin. On the other hand, hyper-pigmentation, also known as melasma, deals with an increased production of melanin, resulting into dark brown pigmentation.
