What Are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks, also known as ‘Striae’, are streaks or stripes that appear on the skin, especially on specific areas like abdomen, buttocks, thighs, breasts and upper arms and commonly caused by the distension of skin beyond its normal dimensions. This may happen due to obesity or may also be seen in pregnant women, especially during the second half of the pregnancy period. These streaks are slightly red or purple in color; however, they eventually turn into whitish gray, as they start to fade.
